Font creation

Thursday, January 29th, 2004

I don’t know if any of you Smoking Drum veterans out there are wondering – but just in case you are I thought it would be polite to at least make some sort of explanation – about the state of any new font creations.

Well the answer boils down to this – I have no font creation software any more. I previously used Fontographer but it doesn’t work in Classic and I cannot boot my Mac into OS 9. So I’m buggered basically. The only font creation tool out there which appears to be current and work with OS X is FontLab which is expensive enough that I cannot justify purchasing it.

So, I don’t honestly know what the situation is regarding new font creation. If I can find a tool which I can afford then hopefully production will start up again. I will keep you posted, for sure.

Strokey Bacon

strokey bacon
A cool grungy font which has gone over the handlebars and landed in the gravel. This is one of my favourite fonts yet.

pyrobats
We kick off 2001’s font releases with my first dingbat font, called Pyrobats. Over 30 flame-fuelled illustrations to light up your artwork! Includes bonus scissor slashing dingbats. What twisted imagination produced these?

Welcome back!

Tuesday, January 27th, 2004

Friends, font lovers, interface lovers, old net-comrades…Smoking Drum is back! The site has been down for a couple of weeks and I am bringing it back to life.

The bits which Smoking Drum was good for (free fonts, desktops, icons) will still be here in the site, once I have added them back in.

You will notice that I have moved over to Movable Type, a blogging tool – I have chosen to do this for ease of updating the site – I am not intending to start a blog.

So, please check back over the next couple of days when I start to add the “guts” of the site – the meat and potatoes – back in.

Tragic Bureau

tragic bureau
This typeface has a certain downbeat air. Most fonts which look like this tend to get given really ‘zany’ upbeat names and I don’t want to do that. Anyway, this is my first face to include a wealth of accented characters and other extra bits. It works great at a variety of sizes too.
