Hi-fi projects update

Here’s an update on what I am planning next, and what has been done.

I finished off my Parker Audio 95MkII speakers by veneering them with cherry veneer I purchased on eBay from the US. I think they look great, so do the people who have seen them. They also continue to sound really good.

My next project is going to be a 12 watt stereo amplifier from G. Randy Slone’s book “The Audiophile’s Project Sourcebook”. It might sound a bit off track for me but I have to get something under my belt before I tackle bigger projects. My electronics is a bit rusty so I decided to build an amp for my computer.

If this amp turns out well I have big plans. I want to build a home cinema system, probably three twin-channel amps plus the speakers, of course. The reason I got that book is because, much as I love valve amps, they are impractical for use in the living room around the children so the course of action is to build a good quality transistor amp.

I am also going to build my horn speakers. I have settled on building the Lowther Fidelio cabinet but using the Fostex E206 full range drivers. I really want to build some horn speakers and to hear them but I cannot afford the Lowther drivers so this seems like a good course of action – I can replace the Fostex drivers with Lowthers in the future.

I also intend to build an active sub-woofer (but I need to find a great design which is really fast, can anyone recommend one to me?) and a 300B single ended valve amp. They are future projects though. I need more spare time and more cash!

And I thought the whole point of DIY hi-fi was to save cash!
